For me, the draw of engineering is coming up with practical solutions to real-world problems. I'm excited that Rice undergraduates are challenged to become problem solvers from their first days on campus. It intrigues me that as early as my freshman year, I could take an Engineering Design course that would task me with solving a problem as important as providing access to clean water for those without it. If I had a good idea, I could pursue it all the way through constructing a prototype, working in the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen with some of the brightest minds in the country. By senior year, my capstone project could be implementing this solution and actually making a notable impact on the world.
