The process of discovery best advances when people from various backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives come together. How do you see yourself contributing to the diversity of Caltech’s community?
Few would expect a girl born and raised in Appalachia to be Hispanic and few would expect a Hispanic girl attending a Catholic school to be a practicing Jew, but that's who I am. Life has taught me that I am blessed to have such diverse roots and I try to share that blessing with others. What can I share with my classmates at Caltech?
I’ll start by sharing my dedication to hard work, to doing what takes to get it done. No one works harder than someone from Appalachia where generations have eeked out a living in coal mines. I’ll move on to sharing the delicious food I’ve learned to prepare from my Mexican-American mother. I’ve gotten a whole crowd to devote extra time to a service project once they knew that the “Friedman enchiladas” were their reward. Finally, I’ll be eager to celebrate milestones and traditions with them. Having been immersed in the traditions of Catholicism at school, it was a joyful thing for me when my 75 classmates attended my Bat Mitzvah. It was a pivotal moment for all of us, showing that learning from each other's differences could be as rewarding as sharing a common background.
