In our household, I’m the “one in charge” during the after-school hours. I have this honor and responsibility because both my Mom and my Dad have jobs that require long days. As the oldest of four kids, I’m the obvious “Parental Substitute.” So for Hannah (15), Emma (10), and Julia (8), I am a carpool driver, tutor, and arbiter of squabbles. I answer homework questions, help with projects, and judge contests. I seem to have a natural affinity for handling all these responsibilities. My parents often joke that my sisters have three parents, not just two. Hannah says that she’s got to get in training so that she is ready to be the “one in charge” when I go to college. The secret to my success? I actually enjoy it. The time I’ve spent with my sisters I wouldn’t trade for anything. It has forged an unshakeable bond between us.
