Beyond your impressive academic credentials and extra curricular accomplishments, what else makes you unique and colorful? Oklahoma is all about football. Seriously, if you don’t understand football, or if you mistakenly take the European approach and confuse football with soccer, people are going to think you are very strange. But, while I do love football, it’s in my Oklahoma blood after all, I’m a bit of a sports fan anomaly—I absolutely love racing; there’s just something so cool about trying to do something not only better than everyone else, but also faster. This is why I enjoy motor racing so much; it is truly a contest in strategy, engineering,and flat out speed. However, it isn’t just any kind of motor racing that catches my interest—I’ve never been especially interested in NASCAR or the Indy 500. What I really love is Formula One.
Formula One is a global motor racing sport, though it is predominantly European (so the races are measured in kilometers, those crazy Europeans). Most of the American racing enthusiasts are more oriented towards NASCAR (a little bit like comparing champagne enthusiasts to beer fanatics, if you ask me). I find it so fascinating that Formula One, unlike most other types of motor racing (cough, NASCAR...), requires its cars to be able to speed down a straightaway at incredible speeds and, the very next second, to be able to slow down to a snail’s pace to negotiate a hairpin turn. It requires extraordinary engineering to develop a car with that sort of flexibility, and it takes an exceptional driver to be able to make those split-second decisions without crashing(personally, I would consider myself equal to this sort of driving caliber, considering my incredible ability to escape my school’s parking lot at lunch unscathed—honestly one of my proudest accomplishments).
I have been to four Formula One Grand Prix’s thus far, though I plan to attend more in the future. In elementary school I attended a Formula One race in Indianapolis, Indiana, one of the few times Formula One has been brought to America. I remember having such a great time, wearing my favorite team’s colors (Ferrari, of course), and listening to all the different languages being spoken.Several years ago, middle school this time, my family went to Montreal, Canada to attend another Formula One Grand Prix. Lastly, just a few years ago, high school now, I was able to go the Formula One Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, which is a relatively new race.
Hopefully, in the future I’ll be able to continue this tradition of attending a Formula One race every couple of years. By the end of college I plan to have attended both the British and the Italian races. Maybe I will even be able to broaden the American Formula One fan base by convincing a couple of friends to go with me. Or I guess we could just go to a William and Mary football game. I mean, just until you guys get a Formula One team started.
