Honorable Conversation

Tell us about a topic or issue that sparks your curiosity and gets you intellectually excited. How do you think the environment at Haverford, including the framework of the Honor Code, would foster your continued intellectual growth? Please limit your response to 250 words.

I come from the state called the“buckle of the Bible belt,” raised as a “double PK (PK=Preacher’s Kid)”. My Mom is a Unitarian Universalist minister and my Dad is an Episcopalian priest.Perhaps not surprisingly, I’m fascinated by the big religious questions. Who is God? Who am I? What is the nature of the relationship between God and humans, like me? Being an outgoing guy who learns more from conversations than from solitary reflection, I take every opportunity I can to talk with someone about these sometimes contentious and controversial, but always interesting, topics.

I expect that these conversations will continue through my time at Haverford. That is why I appreciate the kind of community that Haverford has. It is a place where respect for diverse viewpoints is encouraged, where respect for each other is demanded, and where conversations about the most highly charged topics are considered essential to intellectual growth. I know from painful experience that without this kind of community, conversations about the big questions that interest me can go from lively and friendly to hostile and adversarial very quickly. Nothing makes me more disappointed and frustrated. I look forward to my four years at Haverford because I believe that I'll have great conversations that will give me more insight (and maybe even some answers) to the big religious questions.
