He clutched my hand and refused to let go. He repeated his request that I take him with me. This four-year old boy had been my shadow for the entire time we’d been at this refugee camp and he had made up his mind that I wasn’t going to leave without him. But I had to, so I gently disengaged my hand from his and fought my tears in order to leave him with a smile of encouragement.
This moment was only one of many broken-hearted moments I experienced as I worked alongside family and friends distributing food to my fellow Kenyans during the humanitarian crisis precipitated by the Kenyan Election Crisis of 2008. Living through this crisis was a turning point for me. It sparked my interest in politics and economics and it gave me a direction for my life.
I believe that it is my responsibility to equip myself to be one of the next generation of Kenyan leadership. I intend to devote myself to ensuring that I never have to leave another four-year child living in a refugee camp without the basic necessities and whose future is, at best, uncertain. One is enough.
