Where I'm From*

I am from shin-guards

From Tide and OxiClean.

I am from the black pebbles in my bed.

(Dark, rubber,

they followed me like an old friend.)

I am from the Bermuda grass

the Synthetic turf

whose plastic blades burned my skin as if I slid on fire.

I am from kangaroo leather and cotton socks,

from Diadora and Select.

I'm from the Division 1's

and the ODP's.

From Goal-side! and Second Ball!

I'm from greatness has no peak

fear leaves with the pain,

and intimidation is vassal for weakness.

I'm from the Washington Area Girls Soccer League,

in injury and in health.

from the shredded ACL's

to the grade three concussions,

the shin splints turned stress fractures.

In my closet there is a drawer

a cornucopia of old jerseys,

an aperture of my past

their lessons stay with me.

I am from those colors-

they fuel me for my greatest competition-

The tournament of life.
